This new single ended class A amplifier was developed especially
for audiophiles who own high quality high efficiency horn loudspeakers
and desires the excellent sonic characteristics of a single ended
amplifier. Systems with an efficiency 100 dB/1 W/1 m
and less require more power to guarantee the desired dynamics
with tight bass. Uncompromising mono construction guarantees highest
resolution, brilliance and roominess in music reproduction.
The use of single ended amplifiers with horn loudspeakers is advantageous,
if the amplifier has very low noise. Hum is very hard on the ears.
This requires a very high quality power supply. Due to this regulated
DC heating, double choke filtered high voltage is used. This along
with good circuit design results in very low noise output, of only
200µV.
Due to the nature of unbalanced power supply there is always the
risk that when the amp is switched off a strong spike pulse can
be send to the loudspeaker. This can result in large movement of
the cone resulting in damage to the speaker. For this reason
a useful multi function "spike suppressor" circuit is
used. First, two minutes after turn on the
loudspeakers are connected. This prevents the the noise of the tubes
warming up and charging of capacitors from reaching the speakers.
During this delay a LED is blinking, when the LED stays constantly
the loudspeaker is connected. At turn off the supply voltage
guard insures that the speaker is shorted. If the amplifier
is switched on immediately after switching off you must wait approximatly
two minute for the amplifier to start playing. This safety feature
protects the loudspeakers from unwanted spikes during warm up and
turn off.
